Everything comes together

Travelled to Belgrad to meet embedded++ our electronics and embedded software design house. And Niels from elephant candy our app development partner to work on the app to microphone link.

Finally the app to the microphone talks already. Some tweaks and improvements can only be down if the team comes together in one room.

Belgrad is a nice city by the way.

First acoustics tests with Richard, Thomas and Marina

Richard our acoustics engineer invited us to some rehearsals on the early 3D printed models of the Mikme microphone. Thomas and Marina were singing and playing guitar and we checked the overall sound impression.

First impression is quite good. We were all impressed. Sounds good.

First meeting with musicians for the Kickstarter video

Thomas and Marina from 'Marina & The Kats' are close friends and they already helped me a lot shaping and defining the Mikme concept.

Now i asked them if they want to help me build the Kickstarter video. As Mikme is a product for musicians it's obvious that music will be a big part of the video.

Thomas and Marina have written a new song for the video called 'Hypnotize me'. We met at Mikme Headquarters to go though the video.

Meet elephant candy

So we want to build the one audio multitrack recording app to tule them all. In the audio field. What about finding someone who can actually do that in a professional manner?

After quite some research and investigation I finally found elephant candy. They are from Amsterdam, nice guys, making some hihjly professional and rewarded audio apps such as Level24, UltraPhaser, EQu, LiveFX...

I travelled to meet them and it turned out that Victor and Niels from elephant candy are a perfect partner to develop the Mikme app. We discussed the idea behind Mikme, The Mikme app workflow and technical details. In our first discussions Niels and Victor had some beautiful ideas about how to improve the app.

Amsterdam i will come again. Looking forward to get the app prototype this summer,

First high res Microphone Renderings

Manuel did this first high resolution renderings of the Microphone design. Still to much buttons on the top.

Marina (my main musician advisor) said:

'I just wanna have 1 big red button to record. Nothing else please. And a bag for the microphone. If possible in green or orange.'

Shaping the concept

Shaping the concept

The very first thing I knew about Mikme (at that time the name was still unclear) was

It needs to help me to record my musical ideas faster and easier. And i needs to work everywhere.
First foam Mikme microphone prototype

At our first workshop in Munich in December 2013 with Alex (creative director) and Manuel (industrial designer) it was clear that that path was good and we found quickly an app and microphone concept for the basic workflows and user interactions.

Our first prototype of the microphone was done by Alex in about 30 seconds out of foam. He just cutted it out of the packaging of Nikolaj's 3D printer (Nikolaj Hviid, good friend and CEO of bragi.com - Thanks for your office for the workshops in Munich).

Wooden prototype of MIKME microphone

When i came back home with the foam proto i build a wooden prototype which was closer to the real size and weight. But still very rough. But it helped a lot in our discussions and when explaining the concept and product to musicians, friends and fellows.

We did a lot tests about how it felt holding it, putting it on our tables, on stands and so on. How it fells to put it into your bag, take it out, mount it on stands and so on. All the stuff you would do with a wireless recording microphone.

A big part was also to have it together with the iPhone prototype. At that time we already had screens of the app.

The basic concept, workflow of capturing felt very natural. And Thomas and Marina our main musicians we were talking to like it a lot.

I also started working on a Mikme wall with mood boards and the basic concept, brand values and principles of Mikme. It is good to have these things always around.

First workshop at Munich

First workshop at Munich

First workshop with Manuel and Alex (@Bragi office). Building the basic concept. In these magic hours the logo was created, the basic shape of the microphone, and the basic workflow of the app.

This is the story of how Mikme started:

I met Alex and Manuel some years before while working at AKG as a product manager. With both i did several projects for AKG. I always liked their work and we also became friends over the years. So it was natural to me to ask them if they can help me building that new concept i had in my head.

My basic idea was that there needs to be something which actually helps you being creative while making music. Most of the recording gear is not working that way. It's between you and your creativity and music. So it early was clear that we were talking about an appmicrophone kind of system. But how can that work.

No setup. Fast. Easy to use. Mobile. Studio-grade quality. Iconic design. Simple.

With this basic stuff i met Manuel and Alex in Munich and within 2 days we laid out the foundation of what later was named Mikme.

Here's a small side story of how the logo was done.

I really liked microphones from the 20s and 30s. These were early mics from radio and broadcast stations. And lot's of them just had a ring with the capsule in the middle. And i showed that to Alex and Manuel because my idea was that the microphone could look that way somehow. But that made no sense to us after looking at Manuels scribbles.

But later on in the evening i was eating Pizza with Alex somewhere in Munich close to the Hauptbahnhof  and we talked about the basic App workflow which later on became the

TAP. CAPTURE: SAVE concept.

While eating we came close to this concept and suddenly Alex jumped up and said:

'I was jetzt wie mas mochn – i hob eus im kopf' (bavarian dialect)

'I know how we do it – i can see it already in my head' (translated)

We immediately went back to Niklaj's Bragi office and 60 minutes later we had a basic version of the logo inspired by the 30s microphone shape - this became the capture button. And also the workflow was ready. See the pictures.

This was the moment all started.

Spend my last 8 years with AKG - a great company in Vienna. Learned a lot there. Met and worked with cool people.

Some say every 7-8 years there are big changes in your life. So i will move on to Mikme.

Thanks for everything my colleagues at AKG and Harman.
